On 26 December 2004, the earth shook in the Indian Ocean with a magnitude of 9.1. The epicentre was around 85 kilometres off Sumatra. The result: a devastating tsumami that claimed the lives of around 230,000 people. In order to better predict such quakes in the future, an innovative measuring method with fibre optic monitoring has now been developed with the support of the European Union.
